    Nokia has been in the wars of late. In July it announced a profit slump of 40 per cent, a result that presaged a major corporate reshuffle a few month later which saw the company appoint Stephen Elop, a Microsoft executive, as the first non-Finnish CEO in the company's history.
    Although it can still lay claim to be the world's No 1 mobile phone manufacturer, the crown has slipped in recent years. And in the all important smartphone segment, it is struggling to match the appeal of Apple's iPhone and, more recently, the swarm of new Android-powered phones.
    It is against this backdrop that Nokia's latest and smartest smartphone, the N8, recently made its debut. Several months earlier, however, Nokia had already signalled that this would be the last of its flagship N series phones to based on Symbian - an operating system that has been Nokia's main mobile phone platform since 2001.

    Usability improvement tips

        * Edit Home screen – Long press on anywhere on the home screen changes to edit mode
        * Faster Home screen – turn of theme effects from Themes settings to make switching between home screens instant.
        * Forced Reboot – press power key for eight seconds simulating "battery removal"
        * Screen Saver Notification – Use ‘Music Player’ screen saver to show new SMS and missed calls icon on screen. Time, Date, Profile and Music being played will also be shown if enabled.
        * Silence Calls/Snooze Alarms – Turn around your phone upside down to silence calls or snooze alarms (set it on from Settings > Sensor settings)
        * Widgets Online/Offline: select Options > "Widget to Offline mode" from home screen
        * When in the file manager and when in the mass storage/phone memory/memory card, simply tap on the camera button (Autofocus) and it will bring up a search box
        * Camera: use Pinch zoom to switch between 9 mp vs 12 mp resolution for photos

    Nokia Battery Monitor consists of a home screen widget (Figure 1) and a full screen application (Figure 2). The widget is used for visualization of remaining battery capacity and activity estimates. The full screen application provides more details and statistics of energy usage.
    Remaining battery capacity is visualized with a large high resolution battery bar and also shown in percentages. Remaining usage time estimates are provided for voice call, web browsing, music playback and the overall device usage. Remaining charging time of the battery is estimated when the charger is connected.
