Connecting to Xbox Live in Vista using ICS

Connecting to Xbox Live in Vista using ICS

You have an Xbox and you want to get online to play games then it dawns on you that your modem/router is to far away from your Xbox and you don't have a wireless adapter for your Xbox, what are you to do?
Well one option that you could consider if you have a laptop is sharing your internet connection from the laptop to your Xbox which would then let you keep your Xbox where it is and save you splashing out on a Wireless adapter.

What you will need: A laptop with a wireless connection and an Ethernet cable.

Ok lets get you connected to Xbox Live using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)

    Step One

    First Navigate to:
Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.

    Step Two

Now that you are in network connections make sure that there are only two icons in here that being 1. Wireless 2. Local Area Connection, these are the only two connections that should be there

    Step Three

Now go into the properties of the wireless connection and make sure you have unchecked "allow other network users to connect thought this computers Internet connection" Uncheck the box and click OK

    Step Four

    Now reboot the computer
You really do need to reboot here, it's not optional if you want this to work

    Step Five

when you are up and running again go back to:
Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.

    Step Six

Enable Local area connection if its not all ready, go to the properties and double click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" with will open the properties, ensure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are both checked! then click OK.

    Step Seven
Now go to the properties of the wireless connection, on the sharing tab check both boxes and click OK.

    Step Eight
Go to the properties of the local area connection once again and open up 4 (TCP/IPv4) again and you should now see that's its changed to
    ip 192.168.0.1
    subnet 255.255.255.0
    default gateway -empty-

    Step Nine
Make sure that use the following DNS server addresses is now checked.
    Connect

This should now allow you to connect to xbox live with via the Ethernet cable from your laptop to your xbox.

If anything above is not what I've said then recheck/redo until you get the same results because this will get you connected. Sure it wont be the best connection you could have to play games online but what do you want for free.
